To Exercise or Not
I have always been lucky that I have enjoyed sports my whole life.  I know that isn't going to endear me to anyone who, like my sisters and mother have rarely thought about movement as  entertainment or fun.  I do know where those of you are coming from.  I even have trouble getting motivated to do things sometimes.

Lets take a look at all the things that require movement in our daily lives.  Having to go up and down stairs at work or at home.  Vacuuming and cleaning the house or car.  Taking care of children.  Now that takes alot of energy.  And that is the point.  We need to spend more energy in a day.  I know it gets harder and harder with all our wonderful remote controls, our power this and our power that.  So, we have to look elsewhere to move our bodies more.

No, it doens't mean we need to all go out and join a gym, so we can pay, pay, pay and show up only for the first month.  Most movement or exercise that we need, especially to start doens't involve such drastic measures.

Small things like parking farther away from the store or office and walking the rest of the way.  Or taking a walk at lunch instead of sitting around a table talking about things.  (That only moves your mouth).  I know there is this 10,000 step per day thing going on, but lets face it, that even intimidates me.  Just walk....... and the more you walk the more you will feel like walking.  That is enough for a month.

You need to integrate small changes into your life over a long period of time for them to become permanent.  THIS MONTH JUST WALK MORE....... THAT'S IS ENOUGH, JUST DO IT.

We made through the holidays in one piece. Phew....Everyone always talks about the New Years Resolutions.  It is funny how we decide to fix things up in January.  None the less, those who have set some goals to improve their life or their body here is some great tips on looking at reasons to exercise and eat well for life.  Maybe this will inspire some who need that extra kick.

 EXERCISE:

Did you know that new studies have come out indicating that CANCER can not live in an oxygenated body?  That's right just having more oxygen in your bloodstream could help you to never get cancer.  Exercise is one of the best ways to get that extra oxygen.  Besides, as we age we lose approximately 8% of our lean muscle mass every year.  Yikes..... Yes and over time you will end up looking like those little old ladies that could blow over with a little gust of wind.  Exercise can help you rebuild some of that lost muscle.  I hear the groans right now. How to do that is to include cardio vascular exercise (good for strengthening your heart muscle as well as your circulation and strengthen your bones).  Doing strength building exercises like lifting small weights will help increase your  naturally shrinking muscles.  Stretching is the third component that is critical to staying healthy.  As we age our muscles and tendons get shorter and dry out.  Doing yoga or even stretching exercises you remember for years past will help you to stay limber and strong.   All muscle can only shorten 2/3rds of its total length.  So the longer your muscle is, the stronger your muscle is.  This is very important for those 40 and over. Like massage, meditation and sex, exercise activates the parasympathetic system and provides the body with much needed oxygen and  "feel good" chemicals that reduce stress. It will also make you stretch the rib cage muscles to allow you to breathe much deeper than you usually do.  That deep breathing relaxes your muscles and organs to bring much needed oxygen into your cells. Even walking can increase your oxygen intake and relax you. There are so many ways to get physical. Always pick one or more that interests you. It can be walking, sports, yoga, or exercise machines and dumb bells. Start at home with a video tape if need be. Our lives have become more sedentary with the invention of technology and now we must move our body on purpose.  If you haven't been active for a while it is best to start out slowly and slowly build up to longer times and heavier weights.  As always having a physical before you start any new regime is wise.

Have you ever wondered what happened to you when you die? Linda has written such a book.  It is written in the form of personal letters written to her friend at the age of 89.  It was written so he may read the pages and know that this was not all there was to life. There were many telephone conversations  debating what happens to us.  Within the pages Linda explains her personal experiences with ghosts, dead relatives, past lives and even beloved animals in spirit form.  Before the book was completed Linda's dear friend passed on and later that year came to visit her, just as he promised he would.
